Another tragic footnote to the Dominos story was the fate of drummer Jim Gordon, who was an undiagnosed schizophrenic — some years later, during a psychotic episode, he murdered his mother with a hammer and was confined to 14 years to life imprisonment.
Gordon was moved to a mental institution after several years, where he remains today. Solo career Despite his success, Clapton's personal life was in a chaotic mess by late In addition to his temporarily unrequited and intense romantic longing for Pattie Boyd-Harrison, he withdrew from recording and touring to isolation in his Surrey, England residence. There he nursed his heroin addiction, resulting in a career hiatus interrupted only by the Concert for Bangladesh in August of where he passed out on stage, was revived, and continued the show.
Clapton would return the favour by playing 'The Preacher' in Ken Russell's film version of The Who's Tommy in ; his appearance in the film performing "Eyesight To The Blind" is notable for the fact that he is clearly wearing a fake beard in some shots, the result of deciding to shave off his real beard after the initial takes. Now partnered with Boyd-Harrison they would not actually marry until and free of heroin although starting to drink heavily , Clapton put together a strong new touring band that included Radle, Miami guitarist George Terry, drummer Jamie Oldaker and vocalists Yvonne Elliman and Marcy Levy later better known as Marcella Detroit of s pop duo Shakespear's Sister.
With this band Clapton recorded Ocean Boulevard , an album with the emphasis on songs rather than musicianship; the cover-version of " I Shot The Sheriff" was a major hit and was important in bringing reggae and the music of Bob Marley to a wider audience. The band toured the world and subsequently released the live LP, E. Was Here. Clapton's own original cover artwork, a self- portrait of a miserable-looking character with a pint glass, was also replaced by a photograph of Clapton's dog Jeep, apparently with its muzzle on a coffin.
Clapton continued to release albums sporadically and toured regularly, but much of his output from this period was deliberately low-key and failed to find the wide acceptance of his earlier work; highlights of the era include No Reason to Cry , whose collaborators included Bob Dylan and Robbie Robertson, and Slowhand , which featured " Wonderful Tonight", another song inspired by Patti Boyd-Harrison, and a second J.
Cale cover, " Cocaine", which has since become a rock staple. Influences Clapton has performed songs by myriad arists, most notably Robert Johnson and J. He cites Johnson and Cale as major influences on his guitar playing, stating in the liner notes of his Robert Johnson tribute album Me and Mr. Johnson " It is a remarkable thing to have been driven and influenced all of my life by the work of one man I accept that it has always been the keystone of my musical foundation I am talking of course about Robert Johnson ".
He has recorded more than six of Cale's originals and has put out an album with the artist. Other artists Clapton has made collaborations with include Frank Zappa, B. Mayer cites Clapton in his liner notes " Eric Clapton - I copy off of him and he lets me.
Controversy In , Clapton was the centre of controversy and accusations of racism, when he spoke out against increasing immigration during a concert in Birmingham.
He commented that England had " These comments along with equally controversial remarks and actions by other artists, such as David Bowie and Siouxsie Sioux led to the creation of the Rock Against Racism movement in the UK. Despite his controversial stance, Clapton has not made any notable effort to distance himself from the remarks and has denied there was any contradiction between his political views and his career based on an essentially black musical form.

Clapton was unique because he did not simply replicate the blues riffs he heard on records. He incorporated the emotion of the original performances into his own style of playing, thus expanding the vocabulary of blues guitar. While with this outfit, Eric was encouraged to sing by Delaney Bramlett. He also began composing more. The band would drift apart following an American tour and a failed attempt at recording a second album. Hit hard by the break up of The Dominos, the commercial failure of the Layla album and his unrequited love, Eric sunk into three years of heroin addiction.
Although he rarely emerged from his Surrey Estate, he filled box upon box with tapes of songs. The concerts represented a turning point in his career. In , he reappeared with a new style and sound with Ocean Boulevard. Eric had become an assured vocalist and composer in addition to a guitar hero. With each album after Ocean Boulevard , Eric reinvented himself musically.
Throughout the s and early s, albums and tours would follow year in and year out. In , Clapton found a new audience following his performance at the worldwide charity concert, Live Aid. Annual stands at the Royal Albert Hall and successful albums like August, Journeyman and the Crossroads box set kept him well in the public mind.
In the late 80s, he carved out a second career as the composer of film scores. In , Eric returned to his blues roots with the release of From The Cradle. In , he released the soul-influenced Pilgrim , his first album of all new material in nine years.
In , he continued his love affair with the blues when he recorded an album with American blues legend, B. Riding With The King was released in June and within three weeks of release, was certified gold.
Aside from occasional session work, and special occasions like George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh and the Rainbow Concert organized in his honor by Pete Townshend, Clapton retreated from public view for nearly three years. Clapton eventually rebounded with "I Shot the Sheriff" from the album Ocean Boulevard , both of which topped the charts in Beginning in with the triple platinum album Slowhand and its smash hit single "Lay Down Sally," Clapton began an amazing run of gold and platinum successes that continue to this day.
In Clapton released the double-platinum Crossroads , which included 73 digitally remastered tracks covering every phase of the guitarist's career.
The next year's Journeyman passed the two million sales mark, and earned the artist a Grammy for the single "Bad Love. Clapton reached new heights in with the release of the soundtrack to the motion picture Rush and Its Grammy-winning Top 5 single "Tears in Heaven. Clapton's next band, Blind Faith, became yet one more short-lived supergroup.
They quickly made their presence known in the music world by staging a free concert for , people in London's Hyde Park. But, after a six-week tour in the United States, the band called it quits. Clapton's most lasting work with Blind Faith is the song "Presence of the Lord. Although generally disappointing as a debut solo album, Clapton did find an audience for the song "After Midnight," which made it into the Top In the spring of , Clapton brought together a new band, Derek and the Dominos.
They toured throughout England during the summer of Much of the album was inspired by Clapton's love for Patti Harrison, the wife of his good friend, ex-Beatle George Harrison.
By the early s, Clapton's heroin addiction was becoming unmanageable. His drug use was fueled by the trauma of losing two of his closest friends. Slide guitar player, Duane Allman, who collaborated with Derek and the Dominos, was killed in a motorcycle accident, and Jimi Hendrix died of a drug overdose.
Finally, after hitting the depths of his addiction, Clapton kicked his heroin habit using a controversial electro-acupuncture treatment. With drugs behind him, Clapton staged a comeback concert in London in January In he released his second solo album, Ocean Boulevard.
The album went to number one on the charts as did his remake of the Bob Marley song "I Shot the Sheriff. Unfortunately, Clapton had traded one addiction for another, and this period marked his fall into a serious drinking problem. Each album was only marginally successful.
