Can you get moles removed on the nhs

Some of these stitches may be dissolvable but often stitches on the skin need removal after a week. Most skin lesions can be removed and repaired in this simple way. This "flap" is then stitched into place. Once again a combination of dissolvable and removable stitches are often used. If it is necessary to raise a flap this does leave a larger scar but wherever possible the flap will be designed such that the scar lies in natural skin creases. Such a "graft" is often taken from behind the ear or just above the collarbone.

These sites are chosen because they already have an excess of skin. The graft is then laid over the area where the facial lesion has been removed and sewn into place. In the following week it became crusty.

It's now itchy and painful. I emailed a photo to my GP as soon as I noticed it had changed but it took over a week to get a phone appointment. She referred me on to a hospital to have it looked at but I decided instead to go straight to a clinic and have it removed and biopsied. The earliest they could see me was 21st April. My husband lost his sister the year before last to cancer, so maybe we're overly anxious about it.

But he read today that melanoma spreads very quickly and that it should be seen within two weeks. I'll have been waiting six weeks by the time I get it removed.

Can anyone tell me - is it normal to have to wait that long? Does it spread quickly? I don't know what to do to get an earlier appointment. I know how distressing it is when waiting for an appointment, either for surgery or results. Pre-Covid, if a GP referred a patient to dermatology under the 2 week referral route they would get an appointment around the 2 week mark. Sadly Covid has meant a slightly longer wait for the first appointment and then about another 3 weeks for a biopsy excision.

If you have managed to get an excision privately a lot sooner then that's great. If this happens you may want to change back to the NHS unless you have private health insurance. You should get an appointment within 2 weeks. The main treatment for melanoma is surgery to remove the mole.
