Clearly not enough workers. We ate dinner Thursday night at Cactus Cantina, a Mexican joint with at least three locations in the area. They had a few tables empty, and a waitress was training a new employee. Made me wonder how much actual training will be going on. Seems like businesses would be forced to throw workers into the fire rather quickly. Not enough workers. Traditionally, beach towns have drawn young people to the shore to work in the summers.
My pal Mike Sherman, who grew up in suburban Baltimore, has told me stories about a summer spent working at a seafood restaurant in Ocean City, Maryland. You see it in the mountains, too, with the outdoor addicts jumping at the chance to spend a summer in Colorado. Economists can explain it better than I can, and the politicians can spin it a variety of ways.
But the labor shortage is real. Thursday was another beach day. Mostly just lounging around, hitting the water every once in awhile. The first, Riley went with me. Riley is not crazy about the water. She likes the beach, but not the ocean. I can see her point. Riley is 15 and lives in her own world, most of which exists in that little Star Trek communicator she carries around.
But she occasionally humors her Pop Sing, especially if I can get her talking about Broadway shows and theater. We had a good time finding our stuff in the market, but on the quick drive back to the condo, she lost herself in that phone again. So I conducted an experiment. I started talking to her in a made-up language. Sort of what I imagine French would be, if I could in fact speak in French. Riley never looked up. She never acknowledged my kookiness. Or addiction. Or something. She reached over, grabbed the container and out the door she went, without taking her eye off the phone.
